Goethe-Haus and Goethe-Museum
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) – poet, playwright, scientist, philosopher – is considered to be the greatest of all German writers, an outstanding literary figure with a Europe-wide reputation in his lifetime. He was born in Frankfurt and lived here until the age of 26, when he relocated to Weimar.
His birthplace has been faithfully and convincingly restored (following bomb damage in the war), to make it look as it did in the mid-18th century.
Next door is the Goethe-Museum, with a picture collection devoted to the 'Age of Goethe'.
